Scrabble is the classic word game that requires spelling skills, quick thinking, and the ability to visualize words. This game is popular for family get-togethers or for quiet nights at home. The game and rules are easy to follow, but there are a lot of things to go through before starting for your first time. After a few times, you will quickly get the hang of it and set-up will be a breeze.

Items

If you have a used board, you will want to make sure everything is there. The game should include 100 tiles, with 2 blank tiles included. There should be the standard Scrabble playing board, as well as tile setting pieces for each player. You may also want a notepad and pen to keep score, and a dictionary in order to challenge words. A Scrabble dictionary provides the full list of words that are accepted in an official Scrabble game.

    Set-Up

Place all 100 tiles into the drawstring bag. Shake the bag, and then have each player select 7 tiles from the bag and set them up on their letter holders. Choose who gets to go first by having each player draw from the bag. The player with the letter closest to "A" goes first. If two players tie, redraw until a winner is declared. Play is continued in clockwise order from the first player's position.

      Starting

The first word must be played from the center star on the board. This word can go vertical or horizontal, and it is always worth double the points. After the first player has built a word, the next player must continue and build off of that word. For example, if a player places the word "store" horizontally, the next player can build off of the "S" vertically and write "shoe."

        Scores

Scores are added up by the number on each tile. Extra bonus points are earned when a word is first formed on a bonus tile. For example, the letters in the word "lion" all feature 1 point scores, but if the word landed on a "Double Word" tile, it would be worth 8 points instead of 4. These bonuses can only be used once. Other bonuses include the Double Letter Score, Triple Letter Score, and the Triple Word Score. Add in each player's score after every turn. Use a calculator if necessary.

          Disputes

Words allowed during a game of Scrabble must be from a dictionary; so, no proper nouns or foreign words are allowed. In order to settle any disputes, the word must be looked up in a dictionary and be based on a majority vote. If a word is disputed and removed, the player must go again or pass his turn.

            Tiles

Players may exchange their tiles for other ones during one of their turns, but they cannot play a word on the board until the next turn. If every player passes twice in a row, the game is ended and a winner is declared.

              Ending the Game

Once there are no more words left or all of the tiles have been used, the game ends. Players then subtract the points they have left on any remaining tiles and tally a final score. Whoever has the highest score is declared the winner.
